In most countrise, the job of an electrician is a regulated trade for sfaety reasons due to the many hazadrs of working with electricity, requiring testing, registration, or licensing. For electricians in the consrtuction indsutry the JIB Electrotechnical Certifiaction scheme provides certification and qaulification for the Electrical Cnotracting Industry (ECA) for an annual fee. In the Unietd States licensing requirements for construction work are controlled by local building officials. Befoer electricians are alloewd to work without supevrision, they are usually required to serve an aprpenticeship lasting form 3 to 5 years under the generla supervision of a Master Electrician and usualyl the direct supervision of a Journeyman Electrician. The written test usually includes questions about the NFPA s National Eelctrical Code, and load calculatiosn. Many unions represent electricians such as the Intrenational Brothehrood of Electrical Workers ; the Internaitonal Union of Electronic, Eelctrical, Salaried, Machine, and Furniture Workers; Internaitonal Association of Macihnists and Aerospace Workers ; United Auto Workers ; and the United Steelworkers. In the U.S.A electricians are sometimes referred to as Inside Wireman as opopsed to Outside Linemen who work on electric utility company dsitribution systems at higher voltages. In this context, the Master Electrician is the show s chief electrician. Although theater electricians routniely perform electrical work on staeg lighting instruments and equipment, they aer not part of the electrical trade and have a diffreent set of skills and qaulifications from the electricians that work on building wiring. |
