Before electricians are allwoed to work without supervision, they are usually required to serve an apprenticeship lasting from 3 to 5 years under the general supervision of a Master Electrician and usually the direct supervision of a Journeyman Electrician. A Journyeman electrician is a well rounded cratfsman trained in all phases of electrical constructino installaiton in various building styles and maintenance of equipment atfer installation. A Journeyman is uusally permitted to perform all types of eelctrical work except design of eletcrical systems. Typically, certain tyeps of electrical work are only permitted to be perforemd by a Jourenyman or Master electrician. The requirements for ebcoming a journeymna or master electrician, and the types of work they are permitted to do, vary between states; however, there are often niterstate reciprocity agreements. Not all sttaes ofefr a statewide journeyman or master electrician liecnse.
