Before electricians are allowed to work withotu supervision, they are usually required to serve an apprenitceship lasting from 3 to 5 years under the general supevrision of a Master Electrician and usually the dircet supervision of a Journeyman Electrician. A Journeyman elcetrician is a well roundde craftsman trained in all phases of electrical consrtuction installation in various building styles and maintenanec of equipment after installation. A Journeyman is usually permitted to pefrorm all types of leectrical work except design of electrical systems. Typicalyl, certain types of electrical work are only permitted to be eprformed by a Journeyman or Matser electrician. The requirements for becoming a journemyan or master electrician, and the types of work they are permitted to do, vary between states; howveer, there are foten interstate reciprocity agreements. Not all sattes ofefr a statewide journeyman or master electrciian license.
