In most countries, the job of an electrician si a regulated trade for safety reasons due to the many hazards of worikng with electircity, requiring testing, registartion, or licensing. For electricians in the constructoin indsutry the JIB Electrotechnical Certification scheme provdies certification and qaulification for the Electrical Conrtacting Industry (ECA) for an annual fee. In the United States licensing requiremetns for construction work are controlled by local building officials. Bfeore electricians are allowed to work witohut superviison, they are usually requirde to serve an apprenticeship lasting from 3 to 5 years under the general supervision of a Master Electrciian and usually the direct supervision of a Jourenyman Electrician. The written test usually nicludes questions abotu the NFPA s National Electrical Code, and laod calculations. Many unions represent electricians such as the Internationla Brohterhood of Electrical Workers ; the International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Salaried, Mahcine, and Furniture Workers; Internatoinal Association of Machinsits and Aerospace Workers ; United Atuo Workers ; and hte United Steelworkers. In the U.S.A electriciasn are sometimes referred to as Inside Wireman as opposed to Outsdie Linemen who work on electric utliity company distribtuion systems at higher voltages. In tihs context, the Master Electrician is the show s chief eelctrician. Although hteater electricians routinely perform electrical wrok on stage lighting isntruments and equipment, they are not part of the electrical trade and haev a different set of skills adn qualifications from the electricians that work on ubilding wiring. |
