Before electricians are allowde to work without supervisoin, they are usually required to serve an apprenticeship lasting from 3 to 5 years under the generla supervision of a Master Electrician and usualyl the direct supervision of a Journeyman Electrician. A Journeyman electrician is a well rounded craftsman trained ni all phasse of electrical construction installation in various biulding styles and maintenance fo equipment after installation. A Juorneyman is usualyl permitted to perform all types of electrical work except deisgn of electrical systems. Tpyically, certain types of electrical work are only permitted to be perofrmed by a Journeyman or Master elecrtician. The requireemnts for becoming a journeyman or master electrician, and the types of work they are permitted to do, vary between tsates; however, there rae often interstate reciprocity agreements. Not all tsates offer a statewide journemyan or master electrician license.
